discussion will guide you through this maze of hair loss treatments on
Rogaine, wigs, hair transplants, hair replacement, hair weaving and more.
ROGAINE
The hair loss treatment Rogaine is a topical solution that can be purchased
over the counter. Studies have not been done with Rogaine on nursing or
pregnant women. Therefore, it is not suggested to use Rogaine hair loss
product, if you are pregnant, nursing or planning a family in the near
future. Women with heart conditions may also be poor candidates for Rogaine.
Consult your physician for your use of Rogaine as a hair loss treatment
solution. Rogaine has been found to be better at slowing down further
hair loss than stimulating new hair growth.
HAIR WEAVING
Unfortunately, hair weaving leads to more hair loss with many women. Traction
alopecia is a term for hair loss caused by prolonged tension on one's
own growing hair. This condition is common on women with thin, fine hair.
If used for temporary occasions such as parties, etc. weaving can succesfully
be utilized without traction alopecia. The lighter the extension, hairpiece
or weft, the better. Too much weight will increase the chances of hair
loss. African American women should be especially careful due to their
fine textured hair.
HAIR TRANSPLANTS
Presently, in hair transplant procedures, the usage of mini grafts has
gained popularity in hair transplantation for women. As always, no one
gets a net gain in hair transplants procedure. In other words no additional
hairs are gained. Instead, hairs are transplanted from one area to another.
Dr. Emanuel Marritt, an internationally known hair transplants specialist
states, "Transplanting creates the illusion of more hair than actually
exists by very strategic cosmetic placement of the grafts."
Dr. Shelly Friedman states that gender perception of patients is very
substantial between males and females. Women want thickness over the entire
head. "While it may be common to see a man with full frontal head
of hair and the vertex of the scalp totally bald, with women this is totally
unacceptable." This is why women with female pattern hair loss are
not suitable candidates for hair transplants.
WIGS
The word wig is often misused in the description of modern hair replacement.
It is true that most are pre-manufactured, inexpensive and readily available
at a variety of retail locations. Many people try wigs as a substitute
for hair loss for financial reasons or due to the lack of education on
the availability of better alternatives. It is also true that theatrical
wigs can look very natural and are usually very expensive. Even when natural
in appearance, wigs are rarely a great substitute for permanent pattern
hair loss. The reason being is that wigs do not make good use of a persons
owns growing, existing hair.
OTHER SOLUTIONS TO HAIR LOSS
Unfortunately, there are very few options and of course surgery and drugs
may appear to be drastic steps. Due to these exact reasons there are many
so called hair loss solutions aimed at the individual who believes it
is still possible to grow their own hair back. These "magic"
elixirs usually are marketed on late night television, magazines etc.
and can be summed up in one word...UNPROVEN!
